Many adopters who introduce a young cat to an older cat may find the transition made easier by the introduction of a third cat, yes a third cat. This gives the young cat the playmate they need and takes the pressure off the older cat. This was the case with Edward (formally Lexie)'s family. Please read below their story they shared with LOA. We are so glad they found their third wheel!
Our beautiful Edward (yes, Edward the girl) came to us in March 2014 as a potential companion for our older cat Andy (also a girl!). She was about 15 months old, playful, sweet, curious, and utterly charming. She adjusted to living with us very quickly and we fell madly in love with her.
Unfortunately, Andy didn’t agree. After almost five months, and a lot of back and forth with LOA trying to help us, it was determined that another playmate for Edward would be the best answer. Honestly, we resisted that idea, but chance and good luck brought us a playmate anyway when we found 7-week old Oswald in the street.
Now, a year later, Edward and Oswald are constant friends and playmates. Andy has learned to relax and be comfortable around Edward and, in time, we are sure she will also get there with Oswald. We could not have predicted going from a one-cat household to a three-cat household in only 5 months time, but it has been an incredibly rewarding experience. And while we love each of them immensely, in different ways, we have to admit that Edward may be a bit favored in our eyes. She has the best personality and she never misbehaves and she is just so darn wonderful.
We visited a few big name pet stores and their adoption centers before finding LOA, but only when we met Lisa, and the rest of the staff of LOA, did we feel we had found the right folks to assist us. Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable and made us feel like they were there for us through the entire process and beyond. We cannot thank them enough!.
